My Close Call With A Bad Driver (Why You Need Health Directives)

I do my best to stay in shape, and one of my favorite things to do is cue up a good podcast and then go for a nice run outside.

I went for one on Sunday afternoon right after church and I was breezing through the neighborhood doing my best Usain Bolt impression.

I had just crossed a street when I heard horns blaring from a car way too close for comfort. Apparently, they didn’t want to wait for a pedestrian to get completely out of the way before they made their turn. So I jumped out of the way unscathed and everything still intact.

After I regrouped, it got me thinking: That was way too close of a call, and any kind of impact would have been disastrous – resulting in a potentially debilitating injury (or even worse).

Physical injuries are scary, but so are cognitive ones. If you lost full or partial capacity of your mind, how would you take care of yourself? How would you make decisions for yourself?

If you couldn’t cognitively do that, then it would be up to someone else to make those decisions for you.

However, there is a way for you to make decisions for yourself today while you are healthy, to ensure that your wishes are followed in the future if you ever do lose some of your cognitive abilities.

One great tool is an Advanced Health Care Directive, which allows you to give instructions on the types of care you want related to your health care, and the types of care that you don’t want. All laid out so that in the future, your health care agent and your Doctor will know what your wishes are and how to take care of you.

In my latest podcast episode, I outline 8 Health Care Questions You Need To Answer (Or Someone Else Will!).
